[Because his family completely failed to give a shit about him when he was growing up up to and including never visiting him when he got shipped off to a mental hospital, and he still felt like he owed them enough to trek through hell trying to help them. Because the last time she spoke to him she yelled at him and shoved him into the wall. Because the last time she saw him he was right on the goddamn edge, telling her nothing he did ever made a difference, and she cannot stand the thought of what might happen if he wakes up alone thinking nobody cares.]
[He's... not sure he gets it. Actually cocks his head at the screen like it'll make anything clearer. She says it's important, he knows he should probably tread carefully, but - the hell.]
[It's a while before she responds, because surely even he'd get it if she explains. Her fingers move over her communicator, shaping out an explanation without ever actually entering the words, but it's not her story to tell.]
[He's not sure if he wants to say alarming or the dumbest fucking thing or just repeat the bit about a waste of time, or. What. Except now he's slipping from frustrated to worried. What happened that she can't tell him about?]
Right.
[Not actually related to the first two lines. But he's clocking out.]
[It is an absurd amount of time before he responds with anything, but it's not for lack of trying. Type, delete, repeat, because he's not sure if he wants to ask for clarification (just in case) or just say "ok" and run with it. If she doesn't mean what he thinks she means... but he doesn't want to give her the chance to question it, take it back.
And maybe he really really wants that damned mask. Not like she should have it anyway.]
Ok No code then
[Just gonna frown at his screen like she can see him. Not safe enough, Heder.]
[Maybe they've just known each other too long but she reads a frown into the question anyway. Thinks about just saying no because she's tired and distracted but if he goes after it, that'll be exhausting.]
no code. i put takeshi in when we decided to move him. made sense to do some other people at the same time.
[In the meantime he's going to check out her room. He... kind of wants to ask if she'll be annoyed if he cleans (because he's sure it needs it). Also doesn't want to remind her of what he's doing. Damn.]
[She frowns over put them in later. It's done and she's not sure what he means unless he wants her to take them out again. Whatever, they can argue about it when she's not busy trying to will Alex whole and awake. In the interest of her mental health she just ignores it and focuses on the second thing. Which... oops.]
not unless he asked someone else or figured it out himself. i didn't think to ask him.
[In a similar vein, she... kind of expects him to snoop around, but the risk of him cleaning hasn't occurred to her. He's not going to get any unsolicited guidance on that front.]
[Aaaand pause in the proceedings, at least from his end. The larger portion of it is taken up with him acquainting himself with her mask like a wretched creep. And no he doesn't feel guilty whatsoever, maybe later, but for just a few minutes he's gonna sit here and fucking indulge in the rush.]
should be fine. i don't think he can reach the pad. that's why i put him in mine in the first place. didn't give access for my room to anyone i wouldn't trust with him either.
[And that's not very many people at all. It might be fewer, if she knew Netherlands was having A Moment in there with her mask.]
[Which is all he's going to say about it unless she asks anything else. In the meantime he's at least planning on making the bed, mask slung through a loop on the jumpsuit belt.]
He can jump. Not what I meant. I think Need to talk to you anyway
[She'd add "get fucking rid of it" but that's a given, right?
The image of Takeshi jumping through the process of setting someone up with access to his room makes her smile, even if she knows that if he was determined enough to do that he'd probably just drag his chair over. Still, there's not a hell of a lot to smile about right now, so she'll take it.]
[Even if it wasn't a given, that's what's happening. Or what he's currently plotting out as he makes her bed and moves on to dusting what he can. Short-term is easy enough but he needs something more foolproof just in case shit goes down in the future.]
An hour. Not going in his room though
[Which of course means he's fine with right outside of it, because he's pretty sure he won't be able to drag Heather much further than that.]
[It's a good thing he didn't ask. She dusts, okay, and only somebody with centuries worth of neuroses would think it needed doing aga- oh, right.
She's alright with having to leave Alex's side temporarily, at least. Talking with him right there would feel way too much like she'd written him off, decided he was a lost cause.]
[He ends up vacuuming too. Hey, there's a closet halfway between Topher's old room and hers and on the second pass-by he couldn't help but grab it. More importantly, though, he cooks enough for the both of them (stamppot, bean soup, applesauce, all quick and easy and yes mashed) and scoops Lodewijk up into the basket before he goes. Spends the lift ride down chastising him for eating his greens before they even meet Heather and huffs when that's enough to get the fuzzball to stop. Jerk.
Once he's in the medbay he pulls out his comms, not sure where to go.]
Here
[If she wants him to be somewhere specific, now's the time.]
[She does a little scouting in the meantime. Very little, because there's a empty room right opposite he one Alex is in that will afford them some measure of privacy for whatever it is Netherlands doesn't want to discuss over the network, but more importantly is within earshot of Alex if she leaves the doors open. While she waits, she reassures him that she'll still be nearby ("listen, asshole, I'm gonna be just over there and if you try anything funny I'll hear it"), and when she gets the message to seems to make more sense just to head out. Pauses a moment when she does spot him and all he's carrying.]
[Jesus it's just one basket and it's not even heavy, although Lodewijk hears her and makes holding it a chore when the weight suddenly shifts from one end to the other. The basket gets hiked up his chest as he trots over to her, has to turn sideways just to lean in to greet her and ends up huffing as the basket shifts - again - when Lodewijk tries to lean out to reach her too.
Although with the way she sounds maybe Lodewijk is the better choice for greeter.]
[Her smile gets a half-pout directed Lodewijk's way for its trouble, but he hums and follows alongside when she turns, huffing at the thanks and nudging her with his elbow all the same.]
[It's actually nice to have him there. The familiar huff, the nudge. They're comforting, and for all that she's getting used to medbay and people she cares about being there the place still rubs at already-raw nerves.
She peeks in on Alex despite knowing he'll be unchanged before she heads into the empty setup opposite, sits on the bed and scratches at Lodewijk's ears.]

Do me a favor? Go to my room. The door should open for you. There's a green jacket hanging in the closet. Mask's in the left pocket. Take it.

I found an empty room. Not Alex's. It's close, though.
[She tips her head in that general direction before she turns, figuring if he's come this far he'll follow.]
Thanks. For coming here.

Had to.
